In 2025, EPA regulations will mandate a change to refrigerants that have a lower global warming potential (GWP). That means a transition from R-410A to R-454B, which has one fourth the GWP of R-410A*. R-454B is in a specific class of refrigerants known as A2L, whereas R-410A is a class A1 refrigerant.
Without going into all the technical details, R-454B offers similar operating temperatures, pressures, and oil compatibility as R-410A – reducing the learning curve associated with the new refrigerant.
However, there are two key precautions that must be taken into account:
R-454B and R-410A (or any refrigerant for that matter) cannot be mixed or cross-contaminated
R-454B, as with all A2L refrigerants (including R-32), has a mildly flammable characteristic – meaning:
(1) a direct flame source and a high concentration of refrigerant is required to create a flame
(2) that if it were to ignite, the flame would likely be unsustainable and
(3) the spread rate would be less than half a mile per hour – slower than a typical walking speed.
These differences do require that additional measures be taken from a servicing perspective to avoid cross contamination and/or make certain no sparks are inadvertently generated.

Rheem Side Discharge Universal Heat Pump
The new RD17AZ Side Discharge unit from Rheem is a universal heat pump that is compatible with nearly any existing HVAC system. The RD17AZ is designed to operate with existing indoor air handlers and furnace coil combinations, regardless of brand.
The Inverter driven, variable speed, twin rotary compressor technology features fully variable cooling and heating operation between 45% to 100% of capacity to continuously meet ever-changing needs. It’s compact footprint allows the unit to be installed in locations where space can be an issue, with options as low as 36.6″ tall and 40.2″ wide.
The unit has a focus on quiet operation with sound levels as low as just 58dB. This is possible by multiple sound dampening features including a sound blanket, refrigerant tubing design, fan blade approach and innovative compressor and drive technologies. WHAT IS R-454B?
R-454B is the Day & Night® solution for meeting the EPA’s anticipated global warming potential (GWP) limits for refrigerants and the scheduled phase-down of higher GWP refrigerants like R-410A.
REFRIGERANT SUPPLY PHASE-DOWN TIMELINE
Beginning January 1, 2025, the EPA will no longer allow manufacturers to build residential ducted and ductless HVAC equipment using the current R-410A refrigerant.
R-454B not only meets but exceeds the new requirement with a GWP of 466 and is a 75% reduction in GWP compared to R-410A.
The EPA’s vision for reduced GWP refrigerants in 2025 is just one part of the program.
The other is a targeted phase-down of higher GWP gases like R-410A.
The current goal of the phase-out is not a complete ban – it’s a gradual, 85% reduction in global warming emissions from refrigerants by 2036.
